Please see below for the most frequently asked questions about the Fall Admission Nursing program and application.

Applying

– What are the steps to apply to the Calhoun Community College Nursing Program?

• Apply for admission to the college.
• Send official transcripts to Admissions from ALL schools previously attended, including high school/GED transcripts if required by Admissions.
• After you have been admitted to the college and granted a student identification number (A#), log into your MyCalhoun account to verify your coursework has been properly evaluated and is showing on your unofficial Calhoun transcript.
  • You may find the MyCalhoun link on the college’s homepage in the upper right corner.

  Transcripts:

  – Where do I submit my transcripts?

  • Transcripts need to be sent to the Office of Admissions and Records. Do not submit transcripts to the nursing office.

  – When do I need to have my transcripts submitted?

  • Transcripts should be submitted at least one month before the application deadline to guarantee your coursework will be evaluated by the application deadline. Transcripts received with less than a month before the deadline are not guaranteed to be evaluated in time to be used in application evaluation for the nursing program.

  – I’ve attended several schools. Can I just submit transcripts from the last school I attended?

  • Transcripts must be received for ALL schools attended by the application deadline to meet the minimum requirements for acceptance.

  – I have a degree already. Which transcripts do I need to submit?

  • Transcripts must be received from ALL schools attended, including graduate and undergraduate degrees.

  – There is a hold on my transcript at a previous school. Can I submit an unofficial transcript?

  • No, official transcripts must be submitted from all schools attended.

  – My name is different on my transcripts from another school. What do I need to do?

  • When you applied to the college, you should have included any aliases or alternate names. If the name on your transcript is different from any of those names listed, contact Admissions and Records for information on how to update your account to include this name.

  – What MTH credits will you take?

  • The following MTH courses are considered Higher Level MTH: MTH 112, MTH 113, MTH 125, MTH 126, MTH 227, MTH 237, MTH 238 accepted. MTH 116 does NOT count

  – Will ENG 102 substitute for ENG 101?

  • NO, unless you have a CLEP credit of ENG 101.

  ACT and HESI A2 Scores

  – What is the minimum ACT or HESI A2 score I must have to be eligible for the program?
  There is no minimum score required for the ACT or HESI A2 to be considered for the program. Applicants must submit a valid ACT composite score or HESI A2 score.

  – Where do I need to send my ACT or HESI A2 scores?

  • ACT scores must be sent to the CCC Office of Admissions and Records. Do not send your scores to the nursing office.
  • HESI scores do notneed to be sent to the CCC Office of Admissions and Records. You may attach a copy of your scores directly to your nursing program application.

  – Where can I obtain my ACT scores?

  You may contact ACT at www.ACT.org to obtain official scores. If you took the ACT in high school, it is possible the scores are included on your high school transcript.
  – Where can I take the ACT or HESI A2?

  • You may take the national or the residual ACT. The national ACT is transferrable to other institutions, and information may be found at www.ACT.org .
  • The HESI A2 are offered at Calhoun Community College and are non-transferrable to any institution other than health sciences programs inside the Alabama Community College System.
    • If you take the HESI A2, the scores will only satisfy requirements of Calhoun Community College and may not be used by other institutions for admission and registration purposes. HESI A2 information can be found at https://calhoun.edu/testing-center/proctored-exams/.

    – What happens if I have not taken the ACT or HESI A2?

    Applicants who have not taken the ACT or HESI A2 will not be considered for admission into the program. This is a requirement for all applicants.
    – Can I use my residual ACT score from another institution?

    If the residual ACT score is from another Alabama Community College System institution, we may use the scores for nursing program application. The scores will not be used for other college purposes, such as being used as a placement score into an academic course. The scores must be submitted to Admissions and Records.
    – How long does the ACT or HESI A2 test take to be scored?

    • According to ACT.org, the ACT score report can take 2-8 weeks to be delivered. More information can be found at http://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/scores.html .
    • The HESI A2 provides same-day test results.

    -What is the latest I can take the ACT and guarantee the scores will be back in time for the application review?

    We cannot guarantee scores will be back in time to be included in the application review if they are taken after February 1st.

    – My previous college had my ACT scores. Will those scores be on my transcripts?

    It is possible your ACT scores may be on your college transcripts, but most colleges do not include those scores on official transcripts. Check with Admissions and Records to verify your scores if you have any questions as to whether or not they were transferred.

    Core and Program Courses

    – What is the grade point average (GPA) requirement?

    • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 based on the core courses (BIO 201, BIO 202, ENG 101, and MTH 100 or higher level math). Additionally, applicants must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA at their current, native, or transferring institution.

    – How is my GPA calculated if I have not taken any or all of the core courses?

    • If you have not taken all of the core courses, your GPA will be calculated based on those you have taken, whether it is one, two, or three of the courses. If you have not taken any of the courses, your GPA will be based on that of your high school transcript.

    – How is my AP credit factored into my GPA?

    • AP credit is not factored into the GPA, but it is awarded points as if it were a “B”. You will need to ensure Admissions and Records has a copy of your exam results to award the credit.

    Eligibility Criteria and Program Requirements

    – Are there any physical requirements for the program?

    • All applicants must read and signify understanding of the Alabama Community College System Nursing Eligibility Criteria.

    Campus Choice

    The Calhoun Community College Nursing Program admits a class at the Decatur Campus and Huntsville-Research Park Site each fall semester. You will need to choose your preference of campus, but you are not guaranteed a seat at your preferred campus.

    We admit 160 students each fall semester: 112 students at the Decatur Campus and 48 students at the Huntsville-Research Park Site.

    • Of the students who are accepted into the program and select Decatur as their preferred choice, they will be granted a seat at Decatur.
    • Of those who are accepted and select Huntsville as their preferred choice, the 48 highest ranked students will be granted a seat at Huntsville, and all others will be defaulted to Decatur.
    • Each applicant will be evaluated based on the Application Points Sheet.
